Grand Prix

The Grand Prix is a compilation of races that seeks to put Cavetale’s fastest players atop the podium.
Race types
Currently, race maps follow one of two formats: Laps or point-to-point.
- Lap races repeat the same course multiple times, requiring you to pass through the same checkpoints and begin and end at the same start/finish line. The amount of time that you took to complete each lap will be recorded for you in chat.
- Examples of lap races include Stellar Drift, Mesa Race, and the Season 2 spawn pig race.
- Point-to-point races follow a continuous path that does not repeat. As a result, you will only pass through each checkpoint once and only your total completion time will be shown to you in chat after you finish.
- Examples of point-to-point races include Twinkle, Elytra Run, and Shorelines.
Vehicle types
The Grand Prix involves as many races as will fit in the event time, which means switching vehicle types frequently. Each vehicle type involves different controls and strategies, some of which will be covered here. Every race type puts the Return to Checkpoint item in your ninth hotbar slot, which will teleport you back to the most recent checkpoint you passed through in the case you get lost. An arrow will also appear above your hotbar and attempt to guide you in the right direction, or warn you if you are going the wrong way.
- Boats can be raced either in the water, on ice, or both. All boat races feature coins and items. In order to use an item, you must let go of a direction key first. For example, briefly release the W key if you are currently driving forward.
- Brooms are raced in the air, as riding less than one block above the ground will cause you to dismount. Broom races only feature coins and not items.
- Camels are faster during races than normally in the vanilla game. Use your sprint key to make the camel sprint, and charge a dash by holding down the space bar. The camel’s dash covers distance more quickly than running, and is very useful on straightaways and over water. Camel races include both coins and items.
- Elytra races give you an initial boost off of the starting line by double-tapping the space bar. You will also be given a boost equivalent to a level one firework each time you pass through a checkpoint. It is advisable to gain altitude while boosting when necessary, as you will lose less speed than if you were to fly upward while gliding normally. Elytra races do not spawn any coins or items.
- Horses give you the ability to jump over obstacles that would be unavoidable for many other mounts, but are unpredictable and can rear up at any time. Horse races feature both coins and items.
- Pigs are guided with a carrot on a stick, which must be held in either your main or off-hand. They have very little health and are the slowest of all mounts, but may be sped-up periodically by right-clicking with the carrot on a stick. Pig races feature both coins and items.
- Sneakers cause you to run extremely fast. On the Race server, every other jump also becomes a double-jump, allowing you to hop up inclines quickly and through floating checkpoints that would otherwise be inaccessible. All footraces feature both coins and items.
Coins speed you up when collected. The number of coins in your possession pops up whenever you collect one, and the coins of the top players are displayed in the sidebar along with their positions.
Items can be collected by passing through power-up boxes, which are represented by end crystals. Possible items include TNT traps, exploding crossbow bolts, health boosts, speed boosts, slowness traps, poison traps, coins, and lightning bolts.
